Fire pumps are more important than most people realize. Whenever a fire breaks out, there’s a chance that you won’t be able to reach a water source or fire extinguishers and attempt to put it out; this is where fire pumps come in. You’ll commonly find fire pumps in the basements of large buildings (or at the back of warehouses) where there is very little chance of a huge fire breaking out and if you can’t get access to a fire extinguisher or any other water source, a fire pump is the best option available.


The chances are that if you haven’t had a hands-on experience with a fire pump then you won’t know what the purpose of one is. Simply put, a fire pump is designed as a water supply which has a much higher pressure than typical pumps. As a result of using a fire pump, you are able to get a fire under control faster and more efficiently – in some cases, the fire pump may be connected to a sprinkler system to increase the effectiveness of the system.

Not all buildings are required to have a fire pump installed in them and they are typically found in large buildings such as warehouses, apartment buildings, or office buildings. Just as with all fire safety equipment, fire pumps must be tested on a regular basis and in fact, they should be tested both monthly and annually.



The first type of test that we’re going to look at is the monthly fire pump test, which is incredibly thorough and tests every aspect of the fire pump.

A monthly fire pump test starts by letting the pump run for around 10 minutes before the pressure and water flow are both measured and recorded. Afterwards, the pump’s hardware will be examined to check for any worn bolts, rust, or any uncertainties which may cause the system to underperform and indicate damage.

After each test has been conducted and reviewed, the results will be compared to the previous month’s test results which can help to catch any problems before they worsen.



Annual fire pump testing isn’t usually as thorough as the monthly fire pump tests are, but they are just as important – the purpose of the annual fire pump test is to determine the pump’s water pressure and flow.

Several hoses are attached to the fire pump and in between each hose, there is a discharge test header which is used to gauge the water’s pressure at different points. After about 10 minutes of testing the fire pump, the results are written down and compared to previous fire pump tests that have been taken.

These results can be used to check whether or not the fire pump’s performance has dropped or if there are any underlying problems with it.

You might not feel inclined to invest in a fire pump if you have a small business and while it’s understandable, it’s a worthy investment that you should consider. On the other hand, if you have a large business which works out of a warehouse or a large building, having a fire pump installed is incredibly important and is required in most places. At least once a month you have to contact a fire marshal (or any other qualified professional) to have them fully assess your fire pump so that if there are any problems with it, you can have them quickly fixed.
